Long Abstract Accessibility is all about building websites for people with a disability. Not just colorblindness, but any limitation that prevents them to fully understand the content or message an organisation wants to tell their customers on a website.

Without building fully accessible websites, organisations are preventing access for a large group of people interested in products or information that is available on the website.

Since more countries prohibit the building of accessible websites (like governmental websites in the Netherlands, and the US among some of the countries), this becomes a pressing issue for developers and editors.

In this presentation I will show the audience how it is to 'see' through the eyes of people with disabilities. I will demonstrate easy ways to make any website more accessible. I will also tell the audience why making accessible websites is not only of interest for people with disabilities, but also for search engine optimization and more.

Ric van Westhreenen is managing director at the Dutch internet firm alterNET (http://www.alternet.nl). His interest for the internet started in 1994 while working as a project manager at the Erasmus University (a later user of TYPO3!).

To stop the personal astronomical telephone bills he started alterNET with Hans Olthoff in 1995, so they could deduct the costs as business investment.

Currently alterNET is one of the leading Dutch TYPO3 companies with customers from governmental agencies, municipalities, non-profit organisations, blue chip companies and educational institutions.

alterNET has a strong focus on developing accessible websites and applications.
